The Department of Defense’s Education Partnership Grant Program recently awarded the Craven County School District a $1.5 million grant to invest in professional development for students of military families. This five-year program, called “Strategies for Success,” is intended to enhance student learning through a variety of frequently used learning strategies including critical thinking and visual representations.
“Strategies for Success” will help more than 3,000 K-12 military-associated students whose parents are assigned to MCAS Cherry Point. Creekside Elementary School, which is just a five minute walk from the homes in new bern nc community of Longleaf Pines, is amongst the 15 schools where the military-associated enrollment averages almost 35 percent.

“These monies will support the professional development of our teachers and increase the effectiveness of educators in the classroom,” said Superintendent Lane Mills. “While the grant targets increasing military student achievement, all students in the Craven County Schools system will benefit.”

This isn’t the first time Craven County Schools has received a grant from the Department of Defense Education Partnership Grant Program. They have previously received two other grants, including a three-year grant for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) labs that will run through August 2016.
